It’s that time. Kids are going back to school. Most people think about books, pencils, back packs, school clothes, new sneakers and haircuts. But you may want to add insurance to the list. If you still have high school students in the house who drive or will soon be getting their license, remind them that good grades equal lower car insurance rates. Many insurance companies offer the good student discount which is for earning a B or better. You must provide your insurance agent with a copy of the last report card as verification. Cheaper car insurance is just another incentive to do well in school.
If you are sending your kid off to college for the first time most likely they will not have a vehicle on campus and will be living in a dorm. Is your son/daughter living away at school 100 miles or more? If the answer is yes, then you may qualify for a discount on your auto insurance. If you have a junior or senior in college they may have a car at school with them and living off campus. If they have a vehicle at school with them, remember to provide your agent with the address where they are in school. The agent can then split rate the vehicle so that all cars are rated at their respective addresses. This is important for your auto insurance policy. When you are renting a house or apartment your contents are not covered under the landlord’s insurance policy, therefore you may want to think about renter’s insurance. Many students bring TV’s, laptops, game systems and personal belongings with them. Renters insurance may insure these items in a covered loss. Keep your college student in the loop when it comes to insurance. This way when they are ready to purchase their own auto and renters insurance policy they will know what to do. These are beneficial life lessons for your kids.
