Spring Home Maintance

by Anita on March 9, 2016

Spring-Cleaning-Outdoor-SpacesIt looks like we can finally talk about spring! It’s time to start looking around our homes to spot any potential dangers or risks that may have occurred during the harsh winter months. Spring home maintenance is an important factor for every home owner. Take a walk around your property and clear any dead trees or limbs and cut trees and shrubs away from siding and roofs. Make sure all foundation and gutter drains are draining properly. Clear gutters of any debris from the fall/winter. Patch any cracks in the driveway and sidewalks. Repair any wind-damaged fences and gates, as well as checking on siding, trim and the roof. Inspect all vents such as attic, whole house and dryer.  Be sure to take a look at your chimney for any falling stucco and have chimney cleaned and creosote build-up removed and have chimney lined if necessary. Make sure the chimney screen cap is still intact.  Check inside for any separation between the fireplace and hearth as well as firebox. This is also a great time of year to change the batteries in your smoke detector as well as carbon monoxide detector. Also check your garage door openers for battery life.  Entry and exit ways to your home should be evaluated for loose handrails, loose screen and storm doors. You want to also check for any air leaks. Look for any broken glass or seals on windows and panes.  Check any steps or decking that could be a fall or tripping hazard.  When reattaching garden hoses check for any leaks from main source and that connections are intact. Any outdoor electrical outlets should be checked by an electrician or with a tester.

Does your auto insurance cover your rental car?

by Anita on March 2, 2016

You booked your vacation, planned your itinerary, shopped for clothes and are ready to pack and go. You realize uh-oh we are renting a car…do we have coverage or will it be an unexpected expense to insure the rental? The first step is to contact your insurance agent and discuss your coverages to make sure you have adequate coverage to extend to the rental car. In most cases if you carry comprehensive and liability coverage on your personal car the coverage will extend to the rental car as well. If you are paying for the rental car with a credit card, check with the credit card company to see if they provide secondary coverage in the event there are any gaps in your insurance policy.
The rental company will offer you four main options that in many cases you simply don’t need. Collision Damage Waiver/Loss Damage Waiver is not actually an insurance product but a waiver that transfers the financial responsibility from you to the rental car company if there is damage or theft. If you carry liability coverage on your own vehicle, this is coverage you can decline. Personal effects coverage if you have a homeowners or renters policy your personal items will generally be covered even if they are stolen from the rental car. Personal accident insurance will cover your medical bills in the event of an accident in the rental car. If you have personal injury protection on your auto policy you can decline this coverage. Knowing before you go to the rental car agency what your current auto insurance policy offers, you will save time and grief worrying or deciding what additional insurance you may or may not need.  Be sure to have your current identification card for your vehicle or a picture of it with you when you are ready for the rental car to save time of having to have one faxed over or frantically trying to look it up on the internet. The rental agency will need your policy number and dates of coverage for their records.

by Anita on February 17, 2016

The unexpected has happened, you have been in an auto accident and you aren’t sure what to do. The following tips will help you during the event you are involved in an accident.

Remain calm, you cannot change what just occurred it’s best to try to think clearly about the auto accident and what just happened. Note the time of day, road conditions, speed and what led to the auto accident.

Check on all drivers and passengers.  Get medical attention for anyone who needs it.  Do not move anyone who requires medical attention.

Call the police if there is a significant amount of injury or property damage.  Ask for a police report and obtain the name and badge numbers of the responding officers.  (Keep in mind in some municipalities police do not respond for auto accidents unless an injury is reported).

Exchange information with all involved parties. Get names, numbers, addresses, drivers’ license numbers, license plate numbers and basic insurance info such as name of provider and policy numbers.

Do not admit fault or apologize for anything (you may be admitting legal liability).  Be cooperative and cordial to all involved. Ask witness what he or she saw. Get their names and numbers if possible.

Take pictures of your vehicle and all other vehicles involved in the auto accident.

Call your insurance company to notify them of the accident. Explain the facts clearly and truthfully. auto accident

If you are injured, keep track of your medical treatment. Request copies of all medical reports and bills.

After the accident has been reported you will contacted by a claims adjuster if you have damage to your vehicle. They will advise you on how and where to get your vehicle fixed.  Keep your adjusters name and phone number handy in the event you need it for medical bills or have any further questions involving your auto claim.
